Czerny Op 740 #20, 2 Versions

Czerny’s regular phrase lengths and cadences in the tonic make #20 a ready-made one-pager: just play mm 1-32. But it would be well to make use of the LH material (mm 33-48) and have a piece that allows you to work both hands. The closer you get to Czerny’s tempo the more effective #20 can be.

Op 740 #20 1st Version: short, quick 6/8, 8 sets of 8

Op 740 #20 1st Version Audio

This is my performance of a one-pager arrangement of #20. I play mm 1-16, but at m 16 I use the LH figure in m 32 to segue to mm 33. I then play mm 33-40, and the V7 harmony of m 40 allows me a turnaround to mm 9-16 and a final cadence. For this short piece I’m playing Czerny’s LH double octaves as written, but in practice I usually simplify them to single broken octaves.

Op 740 #20 2nd Version: extended quick 6/8, 16 sets of 8

Op 740 #20 2nd Version Audio

This is my performance of the first two pages of #20. I play mm 1-48 with a turnaround to recap mm 1-16 and a final cadence. For this performance I’ve reduced Czerny’s LH double octaves to single broken octaves.
